For many industries, packagingsustainability is key to achieving global sustainability goals. Hot Themes for Packaging 2022 states that sustainability initiatives will help companies remain profitable. Below are the top five sustainable packaging companies in 2022 based on sustainability and ethics.

01.Tetra Pak Laval

Tetra Pak Laval, the parent company of three companies, Tetra Pak, Sidel and DeLaval, ranks highest on GlobalData's scorecard on sustainability and ethics topics. The $14.99 billion Swiss provider of food production, packaging and distribution technologies and services has taken a number of steps throughout 2021 to strengthen sustainability efforts through its subsidiaries.

Its 2022 Sustainability Report states that by doubling solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity, the company uses 80% renewable electricity in its own operations, bringing the company closer to its use of 100% renewable energy by 2030. The same report also noted a 36% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in its operating footprint.

In December 2021, Tetra Pak was on the coveted CDP A-List, meaning it was recognized by CDP, a global environmental non-profit charity, as a world leader in corporate sustainability for combating climate change and protecting forests. The company, which provides packaging solutions for food delivery, made the list for the 3rd year in a row and is one of the few to receive a double A's. Tetra Pak announced plans to invest around $111 million annually over the next five to ten years to develop more sustainable packaging solutions.

Tetra Pak Laval's success is based on innovation, partnerships and investments across all its companies. For example, Tetra Pak has partnered with major packaging company Stora Enso to 2x increase the recycling capacity of Polish beverage cartons, while Sidel has launched StarLITE HPC bottoms, an oval bottom that replaces flat PET containers to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

02.Crown Holdings

Metal packaging supplier Crown Holdings ranks second on GlobalData's list of sustainable packaging companies. The US company, with a market capitalization of $15.5 billion, has taken a step forward in its sustainability efforts in 2021 after receiving an A rating in CDP's 2021 Climate Change Report, which was released by CDP. Acknowledged by CDP.

In September 2021, Crown Holdings launched the Twentyby30 program, which aims to elevate its global commitment to sustainability. The program identifies 5 distinct pillars of action, representing themes of pressing global concern and business areas where it can make an impact. In October 2021, Crown Holdings earned Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification for its operations in Brazil, driving its progress on the Twentyby30 sustainability program.

Crown Holdings' 2021 Sustainability Report and Twentyby30 Program Progress Report show that the company has reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 22% since 2019 and is working towards a 50% reduction by 2030. The company also announced a 3.6% reduction in water consumption, close to its ultimate goal of 20%.

Building on its success in 2021, Crown Holdings announced its new aluminium can recycling commitment across its global operations in February 2022. Under the new targets, Crown Holdings aims to increase its beverage can collection rate in the US to 70%, almost double its current target of 45%. The company also plans to further increase this to 80% by 2040 and eventually reach a 90% collection rate by 2050.

03.Yile Packaging

Liquid food packaging company Yile Packaging, a subsidiary of Norwegian investment company Ferd, has a market capitalization of $453 million and successfully achieved its 2021 sustainability goals, ranking third on GlobalData's thematic scorecard. A 2021 sustainability report shows that Yile Packaging is closer to 100% of beverage cartons using renewable or recycled materials, with a global figure of 83%.

In the same year, Yile Packaging received a platinum EcoVadis sustainability rating, placing the company in the top 1% of more than 75,000 rating companies worldwide.

Industry experts believe that packaging innovation is the key to a sustainable future, and Yile Packaging reinforces this philosophy by adding Pure-Pak eSense to its sustainable range of environmentally friendly sterile cartons. Norweigan Packaging also won the World Packaging Organization's 2022 World Packaging Star Award for its Pure-Pak Imagine carton in the packaging materials and components category.

Today, brands and consumers are constantly looking for new ways to further reduce their environmental impact without compromising functionality, says Patrick Wilhurst, chief marketing officer of Yile Packaging.
